Monastery Maria Eich

Client: Augustinerkloster Maria Eich
Completion: 2023
Size: 1.460 m²

The Augustinian monastery of Maria Eich is located not far from the Planegg S-Bahn station in the greater Munich area. After a heavy rain event and associated damage to the building and pavement in the summer of 2021, the need arose to resume previously suspended plans. The outdoor altar and the chapel are now surrounded by a uniform surface, which, with its high-quality but restrained design, makes the building ensemble and the forest backdrop appear appropriate. The large paved area allows for a variety of uses and safe access, especially with a walker or wheelchair. A framed carpet made of water-bound pavement is being created on the pilgrimage site as a rest and seating area. The particularly challenging drainage problem was solved with the help of minimally lowered paving channels, which drain the surface water unobtrusively and at the same time provide new orientation lines in the outdoor space. In addition, the innovative climate stone from Godelmann was used for the paved areas. It can absorb and release large amounts of moisture thanks to a storage layer, while the top reflects heat radiation and neutralizes air pollutants. The vegetation of the pilgrimage site was also renewed. The weak oak trees have found a new habitat in the surrounding forest and have been replaced by vital young trees with enlarged tree pits in the ground. This will create a shady tree canopy for the benches in the future. The small pilgrimage shop was planted with climbing plants that provide greenery to the entrance area.
