Donata Valentien studied landscape architecture at the Technical University of Munich and Berlin. She was assistant professor at the University of Stuttgart from 1969 to 1974, honorary professor at the University of Hohenheim in 1980 and at the Technical University of Munich in 1988. Since then, she has been jury member, official expert and guest speaker at numerous conferences. She served on the board of directors at the „Vereinigung der Stadt- Regional- und Landesplaner Deutschland“ from 1983 to 1989, becoming its chairwoman. From 1988 to 1999 she was active on the steering committee of the IBA Emscher Park, and joined the advisory board for the Federal Ministry of Regional Planning, Building and Urban Development from 1989 to 1995. She has been a member of the German Academy for Urban and Regional Spatial Planning since 1988 and of the Academy of Arts Berlin since 1996, serving as the director of the Architecture Section since 2006.
